What to do in Roatan?
Do you have any plans to travel to the Roatan Island Paradise and have not yet made your itinerary, then let me give you some advices
Roatan Diving
Some of the best diving in the Caribbean can be found in the waters surrounding Roatan and the Bay Islands. The world’s second largest barrier reef backs onto the island’s coastline making Roatan one of the world’s top divingdestinations. And did you know that Roatan diving courses are some of the cheapest in the world?.
Roatan Deepsea Fishing
Roatan fishing charters offer an exhilarating experience for sport fishing enthusiasts of any level. A variety of charters with knowledgeable local guides take visitors to fishing hotspots using the latest equipment and safety gear. While trolling and deepsea fishing tends to dominate, opportunities for guided fly fishing on the eastern part of the island are also readily available.
Roatan deepsea fishing and trolling is just a few minutes from shore. Barely 1 km (1/2 mi) off the coast, boats drift over the reef into waters 305 metres (1000 feet) deep. Fish species include tuna, barracuda, wahoo, dorado, jack’s, mahi mahi, marlin, grouper and king mackerel. Sport fishers are in for more than just a catch. Guides create a truly memorable fishing experience. Some charters include a stop for lunch at a deserted beach and you may even have someone cook your catch at the end of the day!
Roatan Ocean Kayaking
Experience Roatan kayaking and its calm, tranquil shores. Shallow waters make for some of the easiest and exciting paddles as you glide above the coral reef, along pristine sandy beaches and into secluded coves and bights. Spot sea turtles popping to the surface, dolphins frolicking offshore or iguanas sunning on rocky outcrops. Choose from guided kayaking tours or self-guided paddles. Rentals are available along West Bay Beach and in West End.
Roatan Snorkelling
Roatan snorkelling is easy! There are over 100 dive and snorkelling sites around the island and several places are accessible directly from the beach. Just a few metres offshore you will see fan coral, brain coral, sea turtles, sting rays, moray eels and dozens of colourful fish. In fact, every time you slip on your flippers, you’ll likely see something different! The calm, protected, shallow waters around West Bay Beach and West End and Half Moon Bay are ideal for first time snorkelers. Rental equipment is available in West Bay Beach and West End.
Travel Tip: Always be mindful of the reefs and check with the Marine Park Office for ways to minimize your impact on the coral. Also see reef etiquette and tips.
